Inside Platanus’s SF Annual Gathering: A Tech Conference at Swedish American Hall
On September 9, 2026, the marquee outside Café du Nord read “Platanus On Site 26.” Upstairs, Swedish American Hall became home base for the Platanus SF Annual Gathering: a day of fireside chats, open-mic Q&A and founder networking for one of Latin America’s most active startup communities.
For teams looking for a corporate event venue in San Francisco that feels like more than a hotel ballroom, this gathering shows what our 1907 Castro landmark can do. One building held a full conference stage, banquet tables, and a bar for check-in and plenty of room to talk between sessions.
Who is Platanus?
Platanus is a startup accelerator for technical founders across Latin America, often described as the “Y Combinator of Latin America.” Its three-month program invests $200,000 for an equity stake and pairs founders with mentors who built companies like Cornershop, Runway, Buk and Toku.
In just under four years, Platanus has backed more than 90 startups in fintech, AI, healthtech and logistics. Alumni include Toku, which raised a $48M Series A, and Fintoc.
The SF Annual Gathering brought that network to San Francisco, with support from sponsors Recall.ai and CodeRabbit. It was a room full of builders, and they needed a venue that could keep up.
Check-in at the bar
Guests arrived to a branded welcome at the bar, with a large screen running Platanus visuals, a swag table stacked with tote bags and name badges, and our letterboard menu of draft beer, cocktails and NA options. Later, the same screen ran “Founder Fighters,” a playful game that kept the lounge buzzing between productive talks.
A conference stage with character
The main hall was set theater-style in rows of wooden chairs facing our stage. Leather couches, a red rug and magenta uplighting turned it into a fireside-chat set, with the Platanus “SF · Annual Gathering · 26” title on the big screen to help center the event.
Sessions ranged widely. One panel on brain-computer interfaces drew a long line at the audience mic, under the hall’s historic and iconic carved timber trusses juxtaposed with a modern disco ball.
The Platanus banner hung from the historic balcony, so the brand was visible from every seat, including the lounge seating along the back wall to help reinforce its ever-growing presence in the tech space.
Lunch, coffee and the hallway track
Next door, black-linen banquet rounds and dried-floral centerpieces were ready for meals in natural daylight. A grazing and coffee station kept energy up, and the open floor gave founders, investors and sponsors room for the conversations that happen between sessions.
Why Swedish American Hall works as a San Francisco conference venue
Platanus’s day shows the core advantage: one building, several distinct rooms, so content, meals and networking each get their own space without anyone leaving the venue.
Rooms that scale for your needs. Freja Hall seats up to 225 theater-style, and Café du Nord downstairs adds a 320-person standing venue.
Production built in. Every booking includes a professional sound system used by national touring bands, theatrical lighting with presets, wireless microphones, a stage and high-speed WiFi.
A setting people remember. Carved timber trusses, a wraparound balcony and more than a century of San Francisco history give a keynote or fireside chat a backdrop no hotel ballroom can match.
Easy to reach. We sit at 2174 Market Street in the Castro, close to Muni Metro at Church Street.
It fits conferences, product launches, offsites, all-hands meetings, demo days and company celebrations.
